At the time of global crisis that
occurred in 2008, the banking sector in Indonesia experienced a fairly severe
shock. There are even some banks that have to get the liquidity funding from
the central bank of republic of Indonesia because their assets are not large
enough that it cannot survive to face the global crisis. But there are also
banks that can survive from the global crisis namely the banks that using
system sharia. Therefore currently many conventional banks that open a new
business unit namely sharia business unit. Such as Bank Syariah Mandiri, BRI
syariah, BNI syariah, Bank Jabar, Bank IFI, act (Antonio, Adnan, Triyuwono,
Muhammad, & Dumairy, 2004). We can see now the growth of Islamic banking in
Indonesia from 2005 to 2010 very quickly. However, the growth of Islamic
banking in Indonesia that so fast cannot be separated from the factors that
cause it. There are three factors that cause the growth of Islamic banking in
Indonesia since 2005 until 2010.
First, the awareness of Muslims those
Islamic teachings contains the teachings of the universal (Firdaus, Ghufron, Hakim,
& Alshodiq, 2005). Religion of Islam not only teaches the relationship
between man and God (hablum minallah)
but also teaches the relationship between humans and other humans (hablum minan-nas) as a form of religion
that rahmatan lil’alamien. Trough the
teachings of this muamalah that make
the most of the Muslim community are aware that the conventional banking system
contains riba, maysir, and gharar.
Second, the government provide regulatory
certainty for the development of Islamic banking in Indonesia (Karim, A, A,
2006). Regulatory certainty given the Indonesian government in supporting the
growth of Islamic banking is to make the Act No. 10 of 1998 which includes
terms of institutional and operational basis for sharia and set up a DSN
(national Islamic council) (Firdaus, Ghufron, Hakim, & Alshodiq, 2005).
National Islamic council that later would make the regulations on sharia
banking in Indonesia.
Third, development of the community
thought about the existence of Islamic banks (Karim, A, A, 2006). The growth of
Islamic banking in Indonesia is inseparable from the development community
mindset. People realize that they will get a clear contract when transact in
Islamic banks that they have never experienced when transact in conventional
banks. Moreover, the advantage that we will get is also determined from the
beginning so that the customer has the rights khiyar to continue contract or not. So, many people are interested
to transact in Islamic banks. It is which cause the growth of Islamic banking
assets increased significantly.
Development of Islamic banks must
still be accompanied by adequate human resources, both in terms of quality and
quantity. Because the reality shows there are many human resources that have
been involved in Islamic banking institutions do not have academic and
practical experience in Islamic banks. This condition would significantly
affect the productivity and professionalism of Islamic banking itself. This is
what it should get the attention of us all, namely print human resources that
is able to practice the Islamic financial services on all fronts, because the
good system may well not be running when not supported by good human resources
as well.
